COFFEEAGE
[ kaw-fee-ij , kof-ee-ij ]

1. A euphoric state caused by excessive consumption of caffeine.
2. An exhilarating physical sensation that the molecules on one’s own body will vibrate with increasing intensity until they explode, typically accompanied by a feeling that the consciousness will continue without a physical form, merging with the infinite bodiless energy of the cosmos. But like, in a good way.

Coffeeage is a versatile fuzz-stortion. It has a unique voice that can cut through a mix, with an emphasis on even-order harmonics. This pedal balances massive fuzz tones with the retained clarity of a distortion. This best-of-both-worlds approach aims to give your tone a ton of power without sacrificing definition. It also sounds great at low gain, giving you sweet germanium preamp goodness.

At the heart of the circuit is an updated take on a classic circuit that shall remain nameless for trademark reasons. Let’s just call it something like a “Sharmshmonic Shmercolator.” The Coffeeage expands from the classic control set to add additional tone shaping, and to bring out some of the weirder possibilities of the circuit.

Fuzz tones can be dialed to feel clangy, extra clangy, and super extra clangy. But wait, there’s more! The control set offers a ton of versatility. Lying within are thick and doomy sounds, synthyvideo-gamey square waves, trebley garage rock jangle, and starved fuzz tones.

Distortion tones can be dialed to be crispy, gritty, slightly blown-out, and even gurgly. Like a garbage disposal. You’ve always wanted to sound like a garbage disposal, haven’t you?

CONTROLS

VOLUME - Volume.

DIODE - The down position gives you germanium diodes (rounder, more compressed). The up position is silicon (sharper, more open).

TONE - Adjusts the input capacitor for a tonal shift. In the middle position, it cuts the most lows, giving a treble-boosted vibe. The down position is full range, giving you all the lows. The up position is a middle-point between the two, which matches the classic perc-style voicing.

HURTONICS - Fuzz gain. From very clean to full on gnar.

ENJOY - (Quah UP and Mode DOWN) adds sub-octave-ish low end gargle, most notable on lower strings. Careful dialing can not only add gargle texture, but also emphasize which notes are more affected. Can feel like a ‘fine tuning’ control most of the time. (May be disengaged if Quah is down or Mode is up)

QUAH - Up is full gain for classic caffeinated fuzz goodness, and down shaves off a bit of the gain for a more distortion-y feel (more bite, less wool).

MODE - Changes the character of the fuzz. Down (while Quah is UP) gives it a octave-down video-gamey undertone. Up position gives the fuzz more of a starved tone. Can be harsh and bright, or provide a weird gurgle tone, depending on other settings.

BONUS - Pre-fuzz boost. Minimum setting adds no volume, but it is always contributing sparkle and clarity. As this is turned up, it adds body and sustain. Higher settings will really blow out the fuzz.

Coffeeage is meant for exploration. There is a ton of interactivity among the controls, and a huge variety of tones can be pulled out of it. Some settings can get noisy and maybe a little unwieldy (because life is more fun that way). Rolling back the Hurtonics, Boost, and/or Volume knob will take some of the sting off if things get a little too hairy. Max gain on everything is not necessarily best on this pedal. But I don’t want to tell you how to live your life.
